Does Tracking Your Scores Make You a Better Bowler? Data From 4,300 Bowlers

We analyzed how the averages of about 4,300 bowlers changed after logging 50+ games in the Bosc score app. At 50 games, the median bowler was up 5.1 pins from their first 10 games, and 6 in 10 had improved.

"If I keep tracking my scores, will I actually get better?"

We looked at about 4,300 bowlers who logged 50 or more games in Bosc, a bowling score tracking app, and measured how their averages changed from when they started. Here's what we found, with three charts and tables.

How much tracking bowlers improve: after 50 games, the median bowler is up 5.1 pins from their first 10 games, 61.6% improved, after 100 games the gain is 6.6 pins, and it takes a median of 70 days to reach 50 games

Key Findings

  • After 50 games, bowlers averaged 5.1 pins more (median) than in their first 10 games
  • About 6 in 10 bowlers (61.6%) raised their average
  • After 100 games, the gain is +6.6 pins, rising steadily with every 10 games logged
  • Bowlers who started under 120 gained +14.7 pins — the lower you start, the more you gain
  • It takes a median of 70 days to reach 50 games

About the Data

Item Details
Bowlers 4,295 Bosc users who logged 50+ games (2,438 with 100+)
Period From each bowler's first game through Oct 21, 2026 (date bowled)
Method Each bowler's average in every block of 10 games compared with their first 10 games
  • Only aggregated figures that cannot identify any individual are published. Groups with fewer than 30 bowlers are excluded.
  • Only bowlers who kept tracking are included. Bowlers who stopped are not, so we can't say tracking itself caused the improvement (more on this below).

Games Logged vs Average Improvement

Line chart of average improvement vs games logged: compared with the first 10 games, +1.9 pins at games 21–30, +4.0 at games 41–50, +5.5 at games 61–70 and +6.6 at games 91–100

Median change from the first 10 games, for 2,438 bowlers with 100+ games:

Games Change from first 10 games
1–10 Baseline
11–20 +0.9
21–30 +1.9
31–40 +3.2
41–50 +4.0
51–60 +4.7
61–70 +5.5
71–80 +6.3
81–90 +6.0
91–100 +6.6

Averages keep rising steadily as bowlers log more games, with gains leveling off after about 70 games.

Improvement by Starting Average

Improvement at 50 games by starting average: bowlers whose first 10 games averaged under 120 gained 14.7 pins, 120–149 gained 9.3, 150–179 gained 2.6, and 180+ dropped 4.9

Average of first 10 games Change at 50 games (median) Bowlers
Under 120 +14.7 763
120–149 +9.3 1,225
150–179 +2.6 1,280
180+ −4.9 1,027

The lower a bowler's starting average, the more they improved. Bowlers who started under 120 gained about 15 pins by their 50th game.

Part of this gap is regression to the mean: bowlers whose first 10 games were unusually bad tend to bounce back, and those whose first games were unusually good tend to come down. That's most likely why bowlers who started at 180+ show a drop.

How to Read This Data

  • Only bowlers who kept tracking are included: bowlers who stopped aren't in the data, and people who see progress may be more likely to keep going.
  • There's no comparison with not tracking: we can't know how the same bowlers would have done without tracking, so we can't say tracking caused the improvement.
  • Still, 6 in 10 bowlers who kept tracking raised their average — a good sign that setting goals and sticking with it pays off.

How to Turn Tracking Into Improvement

  1. Compare your average every 10 games. Single games swing a lot; 10-game blocks show your real progress.
  2. Know your weak leaves. Higher averages come from making the spares you should make.
  3. Note changes to your ball or starting spot. Later, you'll see what actually helped.
