"How many strikes does it take to bowl a 200?"

We went through the frames of about 500,000 games logged in Bosc, a bowling score tracking app, and looked at how strikes, spares and open frames relate to the final score. Here's the road to 200, explained with five charts and tables.

The road to 200 by the numbers: 6 strikes for a 200 (median score 202), each strike adds about 15 pins to the median, each open frame costs about 19, and 89.2% of clean games end at 200+

Key Findings

  • With 6 strikes, the median score is 202 — six strikes is the benchmark for a 200 game
  • Each additional strike raises the median score by about 15 pins
  • 89.2% of clean games (no open frames) end at 200+; each open frame lowers the median by about 19 pins
  • Most 200–209 games have 5–6 strikes plus 3–4 spares
  • Even with 5 strikes, 23.2% of games reach 200 — fewer misses can make up for fewer strikes

About the Data

Item Details
Games 504,482 games where Bosc users recorded all 10 frames
Period Oct 22, 2025 – Oct 21, 2026 (date bowled)
Strikes Includes bonus balls in the 10th frame (up to 12)
Open frame A frame that is neither a strike nor a spare
  • We recalculated every game's score from its frames and only used games that matched the recorded score.
  • Only aggregated figures that cannot identify any individual are published. Groups with fewer than 30 bowlers are excluded.
  • These are people who keep tracking their scores, so scores run higher than for bowlers overall.

Strikes vs Score

Bar chart of median score by number of strikes. From 108 with no strikes, the median rises about 15 pins per strike, reaching 202 at 6 strikes and 300 at 12

Strikes Median score Games of 200+ Games
0 108 0% 28,368
1 126 0% 61,608
2 142 0% 82,874
3 157 0.7% 88,100
4 171 5.6% 79,774
5 187 23.2% 63,111
6 202 56.3% 45,177
7 216 82.8% 28,458
8 232 95.0% 15,528

10 259 100% 2,894
11 279 100% 939
12 300 100% 253

Each strike adds roughly 15 pins to the median score. At 6 strikes the median passes 200, and more than half of those games reach 200.

The most common game has 3 strikes (88,100 games), with a median score of 157.

Chance of a 200 Game by Strikes

Bar chart of the share of games 200+ by number of strikes: 6% with 4 strikes, 23% with 5, 56% with 6, 83% with 7 and 95% with 8

The chance of a 200 game jumps from 5.6% with 4 strikes to 23.2% with 5, 56.3% with 6 and 82.8% with 7. Five to seven strikes is where 200 games happen.

Open Frames vs Score

Bar chart of median score by open frames: 226 with none, 203 with 1, 183 with 2, 166 with 3, 150 with 4 and 124 with 5 or more

Open frames Median score Games of 200+
0 (clean game) 226 89.2%
1 203 59.0%
2 183 21.3%
3 166 3.0%
4 150 0.1%
5+ 124 0%

Nearly 9 in 10 clean games end at 200+. Each open frame lowers the median by about 20 pins, and with 3 open frames only 3% of games reach 200.

For reference, a game of nine-spares in every frame with no strikes scores 190. You need strikes for a 200 — but avoiding open frames matters even more.

7 2 5.5%
5 3 4.8%

How to Bowl Your First 200

  1. Cut your open frames first. Each open frame costs about 20 pins, so making your spares is the fastest path to 200.
  2. Aim for 5–6 strikes. Each strike adds about 15 pins to the median score.
  3. Don't miss the makeable spares. Single 10 pin and 7 pin leaves have lower conversion rates than you might think.
